Ritzy Cinema Bar

Brixton Oval, Coldharbour Lane SW2 1JG
Tel: 0871 902 5739

This bar (or I tend to call it a cafe) gets pretty packed out with mummies on the morning of baby cinema. It's a pretty good place to meet a few friends with their babies and have some nice food at a reasonable price. Probably not so toddler friendly. It's quite a busy bar so navigating through with your buggy can be a little difficult. Still, I have been here with five mummies and pushchairs/prams and we managed it!

Nappy changing? Yes
High chairs? Not sure
Anything for baby to eat? A few things could be shared (eg humous and pitta, salads)
Anywhere for baby to play? No

EAST DULWICH

The Gardens

184 Peckham Rye, East Dulwich, SE22 9QA
Tel: 020 3490 3093

This beautiful new cafe overlooking the park is a baby haven midweek, while also being a beautiful, airy, stylish space for the grown ups. The delicious french toast breakfast is reason enough to go but there is gorgeous cake, a built-in deli and an elegant lunch menu if you need more convincing.

It is a lovely place for taking babies - groups of mummies with buggies occupy every corner like mini tribes in the week - but for toddlers possibly not quite so great as there is no play space available.

The Herne Tavern

2 Forest Hill Road, East Dulwich, SE22 0RR
Tel: 020 8299 9521

I love this pub, and not only because it is two minutes from my flat. It combines a cosy traditional pub, a really good restaurant and the most child-friendly outdoor space in town! The huge garden includes a climbing frame and slide where, it seems, every parent in East Dulwich deposits their offspring as soon as the sun comes out.

The conservatory has recently been filled with bean bags and toys so the little ones can amuse themselves inside too. It’s not the smartest inside play area but my nephews seemed happy there, once they exhausted themselves outside.

And child elements aside, it’s a really decent pub with great food.

STREATHAM HILL

Boyce Da Roca

This is a lovely new cafe in Streatham - great interior, great service. I only had a tea so can't comment on the food but the reviews I've seen out there are favourable. THere is space to navigate with a buggy, high chairs available and some baby changing facilities. The guys who run this have thought about all the mummies who need cake and coffee! They have some kids stuff to entertain the little ones.

  1. I heartily recommend The Tea House Theatre in Vauxhall (SW8) for a baby friendly place. They have high chairs and a chest of baby toys as well as a small area for babies to play. Great cakes too! And as it's right next to the Vauxhall City Farm, a great destination place too.

  2. thanks for this wonderful Blog! Something to look forward to when I start on maternity leave early next year...

Another baby friendly place for your list is The Battersea Art Centre. Lots of space to run around, there is a little indoors hill made out of fake grass that looks like the set of the night garden for babies, pens and paper on all the tables in the cafe etc...

    very chilled.

    1. I do like a coffee when I go out - it's a shame they don't have any. However it is called the Tea House! :D
